Pearl Definition
Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s clear one thing up; what are pearls, exactly?
Pearls are unique gemstones that aren’t found in the earth like the others; rather, they’re found in creatures called mollusks.
In fact, they’re quite rare, too—natural pearls are only found in about one out of every 10,000 mollusks.
Now, however, there are processes (such as culturing) that make pearls more widely available. This way, more and more people can enjoy their beauty without relying solely on the unpredictability of nature.

Types of Pearls
Did you know there are five main types of pearls that you can get? Here’s the lowdown:
1. Akoya PearlsThese are classic cream and white pearls cultured in China, Japan, and Vietnam.
2. Tahitian PearlsUnique in appearance, Tahitian pearls range in dark shimmering colors and are sourced from the French Polynesian islands.
3. South Sea PearlsSouth Sea pearls are cultured off the coasts of Australia and are particularly well-loved for their satiny gold, silver, and white color range.
4. Freshwater PearlsThese are cultured in China and are a particularly common pearl type due to their wide versatility of colors, shapes, and sizes.
5. Sea of Cortez PearlsSea of Cortez pearls are rare, vibrant, and dark pearls that only come from one place—a pearl farm in Guaymas, Mexico.

Pearl Meaning and More
Properties
As we’ve seen from the five main types of pearls, pearls are available in a variety of colors and forms.
Pearls are considered organic gems—made from organisms—as opposed to gems made from minerals. They’re composed of Calcium Carbonate, Conchiolin, and water.
To measure a pearl, you use a unit called “grains,” as opposed to carats like other gems. If you’re curious, the ratio of grain to carat is 4:1.
Finally, in terms of hardness, pearls measure at 2.5 - 4.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Meanwhile, a diamond—the hardest gem—measures at the top of the scale with a solid 10.
June Birthstone
Pearls also represent the birthstone for the month of June, which symbolizes luck, prosperity, and even perfection.
For centuries, people have put on their pearl birthstone necklace or ring in the mornings to bring themselves good fortune, protection, and health throughout the day.
What’s more, they certainly looked chic in the process.
